2020 is almost halfway through, which means it’s time to look back on all the major logo design trends that have popped up over the past few months. Logo design is a fun niche within graphic design, because not only is it very important as part of branding, but it is also much more stable than most other types of graphic design since logos have a long lifespan – even as far as a decade!
Still, many brands are now looking into redoing their image because of the changing trends. Let’s look at some of them!
Black-and-white, as a combo, never goes out of style. It’s classy and simple and goes with just about everything. Simple geometric shapes like lines and dots, simple curves, or even squares to show stability are starting to pop up in many logo designs. 2020 started off with a bang, but its designs don’t have to do the same! Many brands are moving towards simple, minimalist logos that speak clearly, while also not distracting from the main message of the brand itself.
Logos will usually have some kind of message within the design itself. Whether it’s the brand identity, its most important values, or even just the activity of the brand, logos have to speak up, without being too loud. Using the negative space to throw in some creative elements is the rising trend in logo designs nowadays.
Gradients aren’t particularly new on their own, but that’s just because they don’t go out of style. Sometimes the minimalist look doesn’t work so well with your brand, and turning a simple logo into something more complex and expressive can be as simple as adding a gradient – of the same color, or with a different one – to make it just the slightest bit louder.
The 20s are back, and so is the style! Retro and vintage stylizations such as worn-out paper, color schemes, and even grunge are now the new ‘modern’ look and also come with the simplicity that designers look for when trying to make a logo that doesn’t overshadow its brand too much.
Sometimes, you can have a logo without using any image at all! Many brands are starting to use custom-made fonts specifically for their businesses, that speak to the audience without any sort of visual being necessary.
Isometrics have been popular in the past, and will stay popular now! The 3D image on a 2D surface makes the logo look more like it has depth, and by adding a few more trending elements, isometric logos can create a clear brand identity.
Trends change over time, but the simplicity and the sophistication it adds to your brand doesn’t. A good logo will be simple enough to be just a logo, without taking over the role of the brand itself, but will also be expressive enough to speak out to the consumer about what the brand stands for, and differentiate it from others within the same market.
